How far ahead of your wedding should you book your engagement session?
I've photographed engagement sessions in as many as 2 years before some weddings, and in as little as 5 days before. There's really no right or wrong time.
Some couples prefer to have their engagement session in a different season from their wedding (for variety), and sometimes couples prefer to have their engagement session in the same season as their wedding (for continuity, usually a year prior to their wedding).
The decision of when to have your engagement session is entirely up to you. If you have your heart set on a fall engagement session, please let me know as soon as you book; those dates fill up quickly!
The possibilities really are endless when it comes to finding the right place to take your engagement photos.
Is there a location that's meaningful to you both? Maybe it's the spot where you first met, or the place you got engaged, or maybe you both just really like going to the beach, or walking along a particular path near your house.
I love when engagement sessions take place in a meaningful location, but don't worry if you're stuck thinking of a setting! I am happy to make recommendations based on the mood or style that suits you best (chic, modern, urban, or classic, romantic, garden, etc.).
In the end, the location will become meaningful because it's where you'll have taken your engagement photos.
When it comes to scheduling your engagement session, I typically like to book two dates with you: a primary date, and a back up date.
Scheduling both dates ahead of time alleviates some of the stress on you of having to reschedule in case of inclement weather. If we don't end up needing the second date, then it's some free time in your calendar (and who doesn't need that!?).
My favourite time of day for any kind of portrait is during what photographers like to call magic (or golden) hour. It's the 90 minutes or so before the sun sets, and the sky is all aglow.
Since your session is anywhere from 60-90 minutes, starting your session at the beginning of magic hour is perfect.
It's normal to be nervous, but I promise we'll have fun. Don't worry about posing, or anything like that. I'm here to be your guide, and bring out those authentic interactions.
Enjoy yourselves!
A few days after your session, I'll have a sneak peek ready for you.
About 4 weeks after your engagement session, I'll deliver your complete online gallery to share with family and friends.
If you're thinking about save the dates, a large framed photo at your wedding reception, or a wedding guest book filled with beautiful photos from your engagement session, we will work together to select what's right for you and get them ordered asap.
Next step: get married!
